Test Structure

What the ITBS Covers

The ITBS full battery spans multiple subjects. The Core Composite — Reading, Language, and Math — is most critical for gifted identification.

Reading & Vocabulary

Tests ability to understand words in context and comprehend literary and informational passages. The vocabulary section uses context sentences — breadth of reading is the best predictor of performance.

Mathematics

Covers math concepts and estimation, problem solving, and computation. The ITBS math sections emphasize conceptual understanding over calculation — number sense and estimation matter as much as arithmetic.

Language & Core Composite

Includes spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and usage. The Core Composite score (Reading + Language + Math) is often used for gifted program eligibility. Many districts require the 90th percentile on Core Composite.

Prep Tips for Parents

1
Review grade-level vocabulary lists

The ITBS vocabulary section uses words in context sentences. Building a wide reading vocabulary is the most reliable prep — read widely across genres and subjects.

2
Practice estimation and number sense

The ITBS math sections heavily weight estimation over computation. Practice rounding to the nearest ten or hundred and checking whether answers are "in the right ballpark."

3
Read nonfiction passages and summarize them

ITBS reading includes both literary and informational texts. After reading any article or passage, have your child summarize the main idea in one sentence — this directly mirrors the test format.

4
Know grammar rules (capitalization, punctuation)

The language subtest specifically covers capitalization, punctuation, and usage errors. Review basic grammar rules — these are testable rules, not intuition-based skills.

5
Take a timed practice test before the real thing

The full ITBS battery is 3–4 hours across multiple sittings. Simulating timed conditions reduces test-day anxiety and helps children learn to pace themselves across longer subtests.
