Test Structure

What the ISEE Covers

Each section tests a different skill set. Understanding the breakdown helps you allocate study time strategically across the five ISEE sections.

Verbal Reasoning

Synonyms and sentence completions testing vocabulary depth and ability to reason with words. A strong vocabulary is the single biggest factor in ISEE verbal scores.

Quantitative Reasoning

Tests mathematical thinking and problem-solving, not just calculation. Includes word problems, quantitative comparisons, and logic-based math questions.

Reading & Math Achievement

Reading Comprehension tests literal and inferential understanding. Mathematics Achievement covers grade-level math from arithmetic through pre-algebra and algebra.

Prep Tips for Parents

1
Build vocabulary systematically

ISEE verbal sections are vocabulary-heavy. Use a word-a-day app, read challenging texts, and learn Greek/Latin roots — 'aud' (hear), 'port' (carry), 'spec' (see) unlock hundreds of words.

2
Practice with real ISEE format questions

The ISEE has a unique quantitative comparison format. Students lose points from unfamiliarity. Practice the format until it's automatic.

3
Master time management

The ISEE has strict time limits. Practice completing sections in the allotted time — don't spend more than 60 seconds on any single question.

4
Read nonfiction and literary fiction

ISEE reading passages come from published books, essays, and articles. Wide reading builds the comprehension and inference skills tested.

5
Always answer every question

The ISEE does not penalize wrong answers. Always answer every question, even if guessing — leaving answers blank guarantees 0 points.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is administered by the Educational Records Bureau for admission to independent schools. It has four levels — Primary, Lower, Middle, and Upper — for grades 2–12.

What schools use the ISEE?

Over 1,200 independent and private schools accept ISEE scores, including top boarding schools like Exeter, Andover, and Choate. Check your target school's admissions page.

What is a good ISEE score?

ISEE results are stanines (1–9). Stanine 7, 8, or 9 is above average. Competitive schools see applicants in stanines 7–9. Stanine 9 (top 4%) makes an applicant very competitive.

How is the ISEE different from the SSAT?

Both test vocabulary, math, and reading for private school admission. The ISEE has 5 sections including an essay; the SSAT has a different verbal format with analogies. Check which test your target school accepts.

How many times can you take the ISEE?

Students may take the ISEE once per testing season (fall, winter, spring/summer) — maximum three times per year. Schools typically see all scores, so prepare well before your first attempt.
